Britannia Woods Community House (BWCH) offers a wide range of wraparound programs and services to individuals and families navigating inequities in a culturally-responsive and holistic manner. We exist to ensure residents in the immediate Britannia Woods neighbourhood and surrounding areas have access to social, educational, economic, and recreational supports they need to maintain optimal wellbeing. We offer city-wide culturally-adapted programs and services for Black and Racialized children/youth and their families. BWCH works with people of all ages to strengthen the community by providing resources, family support, adult, and children & youth programs and a range of volunteer opportunities. Our core programs and services are Mental Health and Wellbeing, Community Development & Advocacy, Child & Youth Development and Food Security.

Job Summary

We are seeking a Family Peer Support Worker to join our BRISC team. Under the direction of the Director of Mental Health & Counselling, the Family Peer Support Worker will work in tandem with Community Mental Health Counsellors. As a Family Peer Support Worker, lived experience is pertinent for this role. This may include personal lived experience or lived experience as a parent or caregiver supporting your loved ones with emotional and social challenges. Candidates are expected to practice from an anti-oppressive and safe lens and understand the lived realties of ACB and equity deserving individuals, families, and communities.

BRISC (Black Racialized Individual Support Channel) is the first support line within the city that was designed to prioritize and respond to the emotional and social needs of Black and equity deserving individuals, families, and communities. BRISC offers mental health and wellbeing services in a comprehensive and responsive way, which is rooted in prevention and early intervention responses.

Primary Responsibilites

  • The Family Peer Support Worker’s primary responsibility is to help facilitate the unique emotional and social needs of Black, racialized, and low-income individuals and families.
  • The Family Peer Support Worker is expected to support racialized communities through dialogue, conflict resolution, emotional and behavioral regulation, mentorship, advocacy, resource navigation and education.
  • Service and support will be done via telephone on our crisis line and in person; one on one support, family, and group support.
  • The main goal of this position is to help reduce anxiety, resource insecurities and the feeling of isolation.

Qualifications

  • Have personal lived experience, lived experience as a parent/caregiver to loved ones with emotional mental health challenges.
  • Basic knowledge of mental health and the mental health systems in the city.
  • Ability to demonstrate and work through a lens of sensitivity to diversity related to race, religion, culture, literacy and language abilities, cognitive functioning, poverty, sexual orientation, and gender identity.
  • Adequate interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to facilitate groups.
  • Professional, responsible, and sensitive to confidential issues.
  • Highly organized with ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to prioritize competing demands, and remain calm in a fast-paced environment.
  • Motivated and resourceful.
  • Computer proficiency.
  • Bilingual (English/French) strong asset, fluency in Arabic, Somali or other languages commonly spoken among our community population will be considered an asset.
  • Current criminal records vulnerable sector check (or willingness to obtain)

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience providing peer support or take leadership roles in supporting your community.
  • Experience working in neighborhood/community-based organizations, and/or social services.
  • Experience in customer service.
  • Experience supporting newcomers to Canada.
  • Experience with/lived experience of discrimination, racism, homophobia, transphobia, islamophobia etc
